1962 VW 1500 Notchback Sedan

This original restored two-owner early Notchback is owned by Dave Love from San Diego, California USA. Dave bought this cute car in September 1993 from the original USA owner for $3500. It was repainted at that time in its original Gulf Blue (L390). Dave has detailed the little Notch over the past 10 years, bought NOS parts, and replaced old parts but he has kept the 6-Volt VW 1500 Sedan original and unmodified. Type 3's were not available in the USA in the early 1960's and the Notchback was very desirable to Americans. The first USA owner kept it until 1993 when he decided it was time to upgrade to a more modern car. That was when Dave Love found it.

This 1962 Notchback features many unique parts for the early Type 3 models. The rare "cat's eye" side mirror is extremely difficult to find these days, on or off a car! The correct two-tone painted rims are also a sign of an early T3, and the push-button dash controls were only used through 1964 Type 3's. The authentic "Wolfsburg" AM radio with correct ivory domed knobs and Hirschmann "red tip" antenna still work great. And Dave's Notch has two sets of license plates to display its heritage with honor. The original German front license plate is from Rendsburg, the city in Germany which it's original owner was from. And the original "black & gold" California rear license plate is the one that was added when it was first sold in the USA in early 1963.

History: It was built on 17 May 1962 and was delivered to a German VW dealership in Kiel, Germany on 21 May 1962. It was registered as a demonstration car and then 6 months later sold it to an American foreign car specialist, Pacific View Motors in Pacific Beach, CA, as a gray-market car with only a couple hundred miles on the odometer. It was then sold as a "new car" for $2602 on 04 Oct 1962 to Mr. Barry Farwell from San Diego, California. He drove it as his daily driver from 1962-1993 when he sold it to Dave Love.
