From the outside: VOLKSWAGEN 1500 S scripts on rear panel, new thin-slotted beauty rings, 4-piece windshield trims, open horn hole under front bumper. From the inside: 100mph speedo with amber needles in all gauges, straight horn bar, dual-lever heater control unit on tunnel, & "Super/Premium" fuel decal. |
All 1964 models had: | Small diameter 100mph/160kph speedometer, dual horns inside spare tire area, dual-carb high-compression engine, S script on rear, amber gauge needles, dual heater controls, lower cigar lighter position, & two-toned door panels (except black panels). |
Special Notes: | The popular pushbutton lights/wipers control unit was discontinued late in 1964 production being replaced by separate dual pull-knobs and redesigned dash. Also added early in 1964 production was the Premium fuel decal near the fuel filler neck to advise owners & filling stations to use higher-octane gasoline for the high-compression engine. |
Color Combinations: | Two-tone was the standard paint
scheme but monotone could be special-ordered. Seats were leatherette with color-matched cloth center sections or solid leatherette. The mesh cloth was used only during 1962-64 and came in Silver, Red, Blue, Yellow, & Brown. Interior panels were two-tone with either Silver-Beige or Ice Blue on top and various color-matched vinyl on the bottom (except Black which was solid). |
