Mechanical Specifications: 1593cc 54hp dual Solex 32 PDSIT carburetor, 7.2:1 compression ratio with 87mph top speed and 0-62mph in XX seconds, 12 Volt, front disk & rear drum brakes, manual 4-speed all-synchro transmission or optional Automatic transmission.
Easiest Way to Identify a 1968: From the outside: VW 1600 L script on the left rear panel, thin tail light bases & protruding rear lenses.
From the inside: Pseudo-wood grain dash, chromed glovebox knob, satin-finish half-moon horn ring & horn button, cigar lighter with symbol, & angled ignition switch with flat lower dash pad area.
All 1968 models had: Dual-carb 1600cc engine, 12-Volt electrical system, black dash knobs, squared radio area, VW1600L rear script, thin tail light bases with protruding lenses, satin-finish half-moon horn ring, single-handle inner door pulls, door locks on top rear edge of upper door pads, heater levers at e-brake base, black symmetrical rear view mirror head, rounded door panel trim, coil on the left side of the generator, brake fluid reservoir inside front compartment (not spare tire area), & angled ignition switch. Automatics had upper-case AUTOMATIC script on right rear panel.
Color Combinations: Monotone was the standard paint scheme but two-tone could be special-ordered.
Seats were either leatherette with a color-matched inner vinyl basketweave section or leatherette with an inner cloth herringbone pattern.
Interior panels were solid monotone (one color) with four heat-seam lines, see colors in "Interior Panel Chart" section.
