Pure T34 Memories: Dale Buckley's USA Import

Dale Buckley lived in Southern California in 1961-62 and when he first saw the T34 Coupe he decided to be the first American to own one. This photo is the only one taken (sometime in early 1962) of his Pacific & White 1962 Coupe. You can see that it was fitted with beauty rings & the Canadian-spec white wall tires. He believes it's the same one that VW toured around Canada in 1962 at their VW 1500 Tour which unveiled the VW 1500 series from east to west. Dale first saw this car in January 1962 in the dealership show room but he did not buy it until April. This would have made it a very early T34 and would have been built in late 1961. He raced this car at Mosport Racetrack in Toronto and his local VW dealership unofficially kept the car tuned for performance. He could beat an MGA on the straights but the MG would take him on the corners. The car was sold in Los Angeles in 1966-67 to a Hollywood VW dealer in-trade for a Microbus, as Dale was completing his PhD at USC at the time.

Dale's brother Ron Buckley lives in Port Williams, Nova Scotia, Canada. He has owned his 1962 Coupe for over 20 years and has been slowly restoring it back to it's original condition. As the Canadian winters are tough on T34s, his car suffered from rusty wheel wells, rocker panels, & chassis. He's deep into the metalwork process, has completed the rocker panel replacement, and is now working on the left rear section under the bumper. He plans to repaint his 1962 in the identical Pacific & White that his brother Dale's T34 was painted ... to bring the story full-circle.
